Quick answer: The portable map and compass are inside the Map Room, which opens through the Red Tower route. Four-digit coordinates narrow a grid position for on-foot navigation.
Choose the right map for the job
Big Walk has an in-game portable map, a 3D terrain model in the Map Room and community-built browser maps. They solve different problems. The portable map preserves the game’s intended in-world navigation; an interactive map is faster when locating many stations, items or puzzles.

Read a pair such as 3420, 1250
The captured map guide explains each value as a four-digit position. The first two digits identify the broad numbered square; the final two refine how far through that square the target lies. For 3420, 1250, begin in the 34 / 12 grid area and use the remaining digits for the finer offset. Keep the compass visible so left/right movement on the paper map matches your travel direction.
Use 4166, 1899 as a worked example
PC Gamer’s captured puzzle route converts the sign into a destination in the 41 / 18 area. The player reaches the rocks with the in-game GPS, finds a button on the far side, and keeps it held while a teammate retrieves the reward back at the sign structure. That makes it the clearest verified example of the coordinate system producing an actual puzzle solution.
Unlock and pick up the in-game tools
The map and compass are not available from the beginning. Open the Map Room through the Red Tower route; the portable items and laser pointers sit on the table immediately to the right of the entrance.

A practical group navigation workflow
Give the map to one player and the compass or GPS to another. The map reader names the broad square and direction of travel; the second player checks heading and fine position. Agree on a visible regroup point before splitting, and carry walkie-talkies when the route may exceed proximity-chat range.
