Quick answer: Items support communication, navigation and carrying rather than a traditional inventory build. Bags add storage; most other tools work best when shared across the group.
The official tool set
Steam names walkie-talkies, laser pointers, binoculars, megaphones, flares, whiteboards, cowbells and a big golden head among Big Walk’s “Tools and Toys.” The Map Room walkthrough separately captures the portable map, compass and three laser pointers.
| Group need | Verified examples | Practical assignment |
|---|---|---|
| Long-range communication | Walkie-talkies | Give the pair to players likely to split |
| Visual signalling | Laser pointers, flares | Carry on opposite sides of a puzzle |
| Observation | Binoculars | Give to the player reading distant symbols |
| Local broadcast | Megaphone | Use where voice must cross a gap |
| Persistent visual notes | Whiteboards | Record symbols or leave a regroup message |
| Audible tracking | Cowbells | Attach to a wandering teammate |
| Navigation | Portable map, compass | Split between navigator and direction checker |
Communication changes with the world
Steam describes proximity voice fading with distance, echoing down corridors, muffling through walls and crackling through walkie-talkies. Text chat follows the same intentional limits, according to the official FAQ. Tools are therefore part of puzzle design, not cosmetic inventory.
Bags require another player
A backpack and a hip bag each add an attachment slot, but the wearer cannot equip the bag or manage the attached item alone. A teammate picks up the bag, attaches it to the highlighted body point, and later places or removes items. This behaviour is described by the captured bag guide and independently repeated in player answers.
A useful three-role loadout
For a three-player group, give one player the map, another the compass or GPS, and the third the walkie-talkie pair or a signalling tool. When the party splits, move one radio to each subgroup. Keep timer objects and tower rewards on bag slots because community players report that attached items remain with the wearer after slips.
Do not confuse an item with an unlock
The map and compass are pickups inside the Red-unlocked Map Room. Trains, the chairlift and tunnels are persistent island systems activated by tower keys. Keeping those categories separate makes it easier to decide whether your group should carry a tool or complete a tower next.
