Quick answer: Big Walk supports 2–12 online players with cross-play. There is no matchmaking: join platform friends or use a Join Code. The host owns the world save.
Session facts before you organise the group
House House defines Big Walk as online cooperative play for two to twelve people. There is no single-player progression and no public matchmaking. Cross-play works between supported systems, and the host chooses a 2-player, 3-player or 4+ version of the world when the session begins.
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Minimum / maximum | 2 / 12 players |
| Cross-play | Yes |
| Public matchmaking | No |
| World choices | 2 player, 3 player, 4+ player |
| Solo progression | No |
| Session owner | Host |
Choose the host for continuity, not convenience
The host keeps the save and all world progress. That person must start first every time the group continues. When the host ends the session, everyone else disconnects. If another person hosts later, they create or continue a different save rather than transferring the original world.
Join through friends or a Join Code
A host’s active session should appear to platform friends. Anyone can instead enter the short Join Code generated each time the host starts. The Mac App Store edition does not use Game Center for this list, so its players must use a Join Code. House House recommends adding a password, especially when streaming, because friends-of-friends and anyone who sees the code may otherwise join.
- Before starting: host notes the Join Code
- Optional: set and privately share a password
- After loading: code remains under Session Details
- Changing the password: Session Details
Version compatibility is less strict than “all three numbers match”
A version has three numbers such as 1.4.8. Only the first two segments need to match for players to connect; a difference in the third segment is allowed. As checked on 11 August 2026, the official FAQ identifies 1.4.8 as the latest or rolling-out build for a quiet-voice fix.
| Example | Official compatibility rule |
|---|---|
| 1.4.8 with 1.4.7 | Compatible: first two segments match |
| 1.4.8 with 1.3.x | Not compatible: second segment differs |
Official connection checklist
Current community threads contain real “session unavailable” and cross-platform connection reports. The fixes below come from House House rather than comment guesses.
- Confirm the host is fully loaded into the world before joining
- Check connection warnings in the host’s lower-left screen
- Verify every device has working internet
- Correct every device’s system clock
- Close Big Walk completely on host and clients, reopen and retry
- If everyone lags, reduce the host’s graphics load or choose a better-connected host
Official voice-chat checklist
First check Settings > Audio and watch whether Microphone Activity moves while speaking. Confirm the physical mute switch, device input and Mute Mode. On PS5, press the PS button, open Sound and turn off “Mute Game Voice Chat.” For quiet voices, update first, then set microphone input volume at the operating-system level and keep the mic close. Echo usually means one microphone is capturing speaker output; isolate the player by muting one at a time and use headphones.
Keep the intended communication design
Voice and text both fade with distance and react to walls or soundproof glass. House House strongly recommends against a separate voice call because restricted communication is part of the challenges. Walkie-talkies, gestures, whiteboards and regroup plans are the in-world recovery tools when players split.
